A Ship of Honor

Seven and a Half Tons of Steel
By Janet Nolan

September 11, 2001 is a day that no American will ever forget. A whole country watched in horror as the World Trade Center fell. We cried as a country. While workers worked in Ground Zero, they removed a seven and a half ton steel beam that was once a part of the World Trade Center. That beam was melted down and became the bow of the Navy ship USS New York. This is the story of that very special ship.

Goldilocks was getting a lot of hits posting everyday things, but then the "likes" start to slow. Goldilocks had to do something to boost her "likes" and that's when she found the house of the three bears! After breaking an entering, she found a lot to post to social media and get those fans that she so desperately needed. Goldilocks also found herself in a loads of trouble. This is a great book to talk about how far you should go for the sake of "likes". Sometimes that road to glory will get you into quite a lot of hot water!

Books To Introduce The Library To Kids

The library is an amazing place and all kids should have some basics of how the library operates. Here are a few books to get kids excited about books and their local library!!

Bats at the Library

By: Brian Lies

When the window of the library is mistakenly left open, the neighborhood bats swoop in and enjoy everything the library has to offer. They have an amazing night until morning when they leave dreaming of another night the window is left open.

Never Let a Ghost Borrow Your Library Book: Book Care Guidelines From the Library Secret Service

By Karen Casale

Did you know that every librarian is a member of the Library Secret Service (LSS)? Well, they are and the LSS has issued a book user manual called the Very Official Guidelines (VOG) to help everyone know how to treat their books. Very important rules such as don't let babies drool on your books to don't leave them out in the sun to don't dog ear the pages. The VOG emphasis that if you LOVE your book SO much then renew it! Never Let a Ghost Borrow Your Library Book is a really fun read that kids and parents will get a kick out of and learn a few things along the way!

The Boy Who Was Raised By Librarians

By Carla Morris

This really does seem like a fun library and the librarians are always there to answer Melvin's questions. He stops in all the time and the three librarians are always excited to hear what Melvin is doing and delve further into topics he is interested in. Melvin comes to the library every day and the librarians watch him grow and graduate from high school and even in college, Melvin sends them emails of the things he's reading and studying. Then one day, the Livingston Library has a new librarian and you'll never guess who it is. This is a wonderful book of how inclusive the library is and how important librarians are in our lives!

The Incredible Book Eating Boy

By Oliver Jeffers

First, Oliver Jeffers is awesome! He has a quirky writing style, but his book are fun to read and kids love them. Second, The Incredible Book Eating Boy is no exception! Henry loved books. A chomp here. A chomp there. Pretty soon Henry was consuming books at an alarming rate and getting smarter and smarter until it all started to go wrong. How did Henry finally fix his problem and did he ever go back to eating books?

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

By William Joyce

One of my all time favorites! A beautiful story of finding oneself by caring for others and in this case it's books. Morris cared for the books as he wrote his own story. He told their tales and shared them with those who needed to hear them. He did this until his own book was finished. A tale of the wonderful adventures that books can bring to a person's life and even the smallest of tales should be shared.

Bob the Alien Discovers the Dewey Decimal System

By Sandy Donovan

Looking for a good book to teach young readers to the Dewey Decimal System? This is it. Bob is from another planet where they don't have books and he's come to Earth to learn more about spiders. Allison Wonderland takes Bob through the library explaining how the library is arranged and what all of those numbers mean! A must for any library lesson!
